Brilliant Stars: Charizard Returns to Modern Packs

A Brilliant Stars booster box runs about $602 in our July 2026 price snapshot and rips into roughly $197 worth of cards. That's a -69% margin on a set whose whole identity is one Charizard — and if you want that Charizard, there's a much cheaper way to get it.

Brilliant Stars released February 25, 2022, as the ninth Sword & Shield expansion. It matters for two reasons. It introduced the VSTAR mechanic, and it debuted the Trainer Gallery — a 30-card subset of character-and-Pokémon art that carried through the rest of the SWSH era. But nobody opens this set for mechanics. They open it because Charizard got his first flagship alt art of the era, and the market never stopped caring.

The Brilliant Stars chase cards

Approximate prices from the same July 2026 snapshot:

  • Charizard V (alt art) — about $353
  • Charizard VSTAR (rainbow) — about $81
  • Arceus V (alt art) — about $60
  • Charizard V (full art) — about $42
  • Pikachu V (full art) — about $29
  • Ultra Ball (gold secret) — about $22

Look at the gap. The alt art Charizard is worth more than the next five cards combined. That's extreme chase concentration: pack EV leans almost entirely on one long-shot pull, and everything below the Arceus is filler by hit-slot standards. When a set's value pyramid is this steep, ripping is a lottery ticket with a bad jackpot ratio.

Pull rates: the estimates

The calculator models Brilliant Stars with a reverse holo slot, a holo rare slot, and a hit slot. The hit slot, per community-sampled estimates (nobody publishes official odds), breaks down roughly as:

  • Full art / alt art: ~8% of packs
  • Trainer Gallery alt: ~2%
  • Rainbow rare: ~2%
  • Gold secret: ~1%
  • Everything else: a baseline holo, ~87% of packs

The holo slot separately runs about 10% VSTAR/VMAX and 3% Radiant. So a 36-pack box averages roughly three full/alt arts — but Brilliant Stars has a lot of full arts, and only one of them is the $353 Charizard. Most boxes deliver alts from the $10–40 tier. Treat all of these numbers as estimates with error bars, not gospel.

Product comparison: every option loses

ProductPriceEVMargin
Booster Pack$13.70$5.46-66%
Build & Battle Box (4 packs)$53.82$21.85-63%
Elite Trainer Box (8 packs)$157.11$43.71-75%
Booster Box (36 packs)$602.16$196.69-69%

There's no clever pick here. The Build & Battle box is the least bad per pack, the ETB is the worst, and the booster box burns about $405 of expected value per rip. You can run the live numbers for this set yourself — the shape doesn't change.

The sealed-and-hold argument deserves a fair hearing, because SWSH boxes have appreciated since the era ended. The problem: that appreciation already happened. At $602, you're not buying the 2022 story, you're buying the 2026 price — and boxes this far along their lifecycle appreciate slowly, cost money to store, and are illiquid at exactly the moments you'd want to sell.

Verdict: buy the Charizard, skip the packs

The alt art Charizard V costs about $353 — the price of 26 loose packs. Twenty-six packs get you, on average, two full arts from a mostly cheap board and a one-in-many shot at the card you actually wanted. The single is the trade, and that logic generalizes: singles beat ripping in any set where one card is the whole show.

If you're determined to open Brilliant Stars for fun, buy loose packs or a Build & Battle, cap the budget, and treat the EV loss as an entertainment fee. It's a well-designed set with a great-looking Trainer Gallery. It's just a terrible place to put $602 expecting cardboard back. Compare it with Evolving Skies, its more extreme sibling, and you'll see the same pattern at double the stakes.

FAQ

What is the most expensive card in Brilliant Stars?

The alternate art Charizard V, at roughly $353 in our July 2026 snapshot. The rainbow Charizard VSTAR is a distant second at about $81.

How rare is the Charizard V alt art?

Community estimates put any full or alt art at about 8% of packs, spread across the set's whole full-art board. A specific alt like the Charizard is a small fraction of that — expect long odds even across a full booster box.

Is a Brilliant Stars booster box a good investment?

At about $602 against $197 of rip EV, it's a bet on continued sealed appreciation, not on contents. The easy gains came before 2026; from here it's slow, storage-dependent, and illiquid.
